Sensitive teeth? There’s usually a fix.
That zing from ice water or a cold drink is common, and you don’t have to live with it. Here’s what causes it and what helps.

Common causes and fixes.
| Cause | Clues | What usually helps |
|---|---|---|
| Gums pulling back | Sensitivity near the gumline; teeth look longer | Sensitivity toothpaste, fluoride, bonding over the root, gum care |
| Worn enamel | Several teeth; acidic drinks or hard brushing | Soft brush, sensitivity toothpaste, fluoride |
| Cavity or old filling | One tooth; sweets set it off | A filling |
| Cracked tooth | Pain when biting or letting go | Bonding or a crown |
| Recent whitening or filling | Started right after treatment | Usually fades within days to a few weeks |
| Clenching or grinding | Flat, worn edges; sore jaw in the morning | Ask us about protecting your teeth |
What you can try at home.
- Use a sensitivity toothpaste twice a day for two to four weeks. Spit, but don’t rinse.
- Brush gently with a soft brush. Scrubbing hard wears gums and enamel.
- Limit soda, sports drinks, and citrus, or drink them with a straw.
- Wait about 30 minutes after acidic food or drinks before you brush.
- Keep brushing and flossing. Skipping them makes things worse.
When to have it checked.
- The pain is in one tooth.
- Pain lingers more than about 30 seconds after cold or heat.
- It hurts to bite.
- You notice swelling or a bad taste.
- Sensitivity toothpaste hasn’t helped after a few weeks.
- Exam

Photos and x-rays show whether it is a cavity, crack, worn enamel, or gum recession.
- Simplest fix first
Often a fluoride treatment or toothpaste change. Sometimes a small filling or bonding.

Insurance, minus the headache.
- Most PPO plans welcome. We check your benefits before your visit, including deductible and remaining yearly maximum.
- A written estimate first. For anything beyond a routine preventive visit, you see what insurance is expected to pay and what you owe before we begin.
- We file the claim. You don’t need to send anything to your carrier yourself.
- No insurance? No problem. We explain costs up front. Our membership plan covers routine care for one yearly fee, and CareCredit or Cherry financing can help with larger treatment.
Not sure what your plan covers?
Call with your carrier name and member ID. We’ll tell you what to expect before you book. Heads up: we don’t participate in most DHMO or Medi-Cal dental plans.
