Your first visit takes about an hour and includes a listen, a gentle exam, any needed low-dose imaging, and a plain-language review of what we see. You leave with a written treatment plan and cost estimate. No treatment happens without your go-ahead.

Day one, no surprises.

Share your goals

What brought you in, what has worked, what you would like to change. This is the most important part.

Gentle exam and imaging

A comprehensive look at teeth, gums, bite, and oral cancer screening. Digital, low-dose imaging only where clinically needed.

Findings, in plain language

We show you what we see on the chairside screen. Questions welcomed. Nothing rushed.

Written plan and estimate

Options with costs, phased if appropriate. You decide what happens next, at your pace.

What to bring (it’s a short list).

  • Photo ID for our records.
  • Dental insurance card if you have coverage. We verify benefits before your visit when possible, but the physical card helps.
  • List of medications and supplements, including prescription and over-the-counter.
  • Any relevant medical history, especially conditions or recent surgeries.
  • Previous x-rays or dental records, if available. We can request them from your previous dentist too.
  • Questions. Written down or in your head. We want to hear them.

Please plan to arrive 10 to 15 minutes early so we can complete paperwork calmly.

If it’s been a while, or you’re feeling nervous.

Dental anxiety is common and it doesn’t disqualify you from great care. Tell the front desk when you book. Tell your hygienist and doctor when you sit down. We slow down, explain everything, and pause whenever you need to.

If it has been years since your last visit, we start with the visit you can say yes to today. No lectures. No guilt. We build from there together.

Practical comfort tools available on request:

  • Blankets and neck pillows
  • Headphones with your own music
  • Breaks whenever you need them
  • Numbing that we let take full effect before starting
  • A quiet time-of-day appointment (early morning tends to be quietest)

Bringing a child?

First dental visits are best kept short and low-pressure. We keep it playful, use kid-friendly language, and take our time so a child leaves feeling proud, not stressed.

Parents are always welcome in the treatment room. For children under two, plan on a brief “knee-to-knee” exam where the child sits on your lap.

Money talk, up front.

We verify your benefits before your first visit when you provide your carrier information at booking. Any treatment plan is presented with a written cost estimate before we begin. No surprise bills.

We work with most PPO dental plans. Coverage varies plan by plan, so estimates are our best reading based on what your carrier confirms. Final benefits are determined by the insurance company after the claim is processed.

If you don’t have insurance, we’ll explain your options and what each choice actually costs. Payment is expected at the time of service; we help you understand what you owe before we begin.

Common questions

How long will my first visit take?
Plan for about an hour. That covers listening to your goals, a comprehensive exam, any needed digital imaging, a plain-language review of what we see, and a written treatment plan with cost estimate.
Will I get a cleaning at my first visit?
Sometimes. It depends on what we find. If your gums are healthy, we can often complete a cleaning the same day. If there is more to address first, we schedule the appropriate cleaning as a follow-up and explain why.
Do I need to bring anything?
Photo ID, insurance card if you have one, a list of medications, and any previous dental records or x-rays. Written questions are also welcome. Please arrive 10 to 15 minutes early.
Do you accept my insurance?
We work with most PPO dental plans. We verify your specific benefits before your visit when you provide your carrier information. See our insurance and payment page for details.
I haven’t been to the dentist in years. Will you judge me?
No. Really. We meet you where you are. Many of our long-term patients started with a “where do I even begin” conversation. There’s no lecture. We build a plan from what matters most today.
Can I bring a friend or family member into the room?
Yes. A support person is welcome to sit with you during your visit. If you’re bringing a child, one parent in the room is standard.
What if I am nervous about pain?
Tell us before we start. Numbing is our default for any procedure that requires it, and we let it take full effect before beginning. Sedation options are available for anxious patients. Call (805) 922-4109 to discuss.
Can I schedule my whole family for the same day?
Often, yes. Tell us when you book and we’ll try to line up back-to-back visits.
Will I know the cost before treatment, and when do I pay?
Yes. Before any treatment beyond your exam and cleaning, you get a written plan with a cost estimate. If you have insurance, we check your benefits first and file the claim for you. Your portion is due at the time of service. We accept cash, check, major credit cards, and financing through CareCredit or Cherry for larger treatment. See insurance and payment.
