“How often do I really need a cleaning?” It’s one of the most-asked questions in dentistry — and the answer isn’t the same for everyone.
The standard answer: every six months
For most healthy adults, a professional cleaning and exam every six months is the right cadence. This guideline isn’t arbitrary — it’s based on how quickly plaque hardens into tartar (which you can’t remove at home), and how often we need to look at your teeth and gums to catch small problems before they get expensive.
Why six months?
Three reasons:
- Tartar timing. Plaque (soft) starts hardening into tartar (rock-hard) within 24–48 hours. Once it’s tartar, only a professional cleaning removes it. Six months is roughly the point where most adults have built up enough that a deeper hygiene visit makes a meaningful difference.
- Cavity catch-rate. A small cavity is a tiny filling. The same cavity caught a year later is often a crown or a root canal. Twice-a-year exams keep small problems small.
- Gum disease detection. Gum disease moves quietly — you usually don’t feel it until it’s advanced. Six-month check-ins catch early gum changes when they’re still reversible.
When you actually need more than two a year
Some people benefit from cleanings every three or four months instead of six. You’re likely in this group if any of these apply:
- You’ve had gum disease (periodontitis) in the past, even if it’s stable now.
- You smoke or vape.
- You’re pregnant.
- You have diabetes, especially if not perfectly controlled.
- You’re in orthodontic treatment (braces or aligners).
- You have a weakened immune system or take medications that affect your gums (some heart, blood pressure, or anti-seizure medications).
- You tend to build tartar quickly — we can tell after one or two visits.
If any of those apply to you, we’ll recommend a custom hygiene schedule. It’s not upselling — it’s the difference between catching problems and losing teeth.
When you might need less than every six months
It’s rare, but possible. A small subset of patients with very clean home care, no gum disease history, and a low-cavity-risk profile can stretch to nine or even twelve months between cleanings — if their exam every six months still looks great. We make that call together, based on what we see in your mouth, not a rigid schedule.
What if you’ve fallen behind?
If it’s been more than a year since your last cleaning — or honestly, more than a few years — you’re not alone, and we’re not going to give you a hard time about it. We start by listening, then we look, then we recommend the gentlest path back to healthy.
Sometimes that’s one cleaning and you’re back on track. Sometimes it’s a more thorough hygiene visit broken into two appointments. Either way, we explain everything before we touch anything — including what it costs.
