If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance it’s been a while — and you’ve been thinking about it for longer than you’d like to admit. Maybe years. Maybe a decade or more.
Here’s what we want you to know, before anything else: you’re not the only one. Roughly one in three adults skips the dentist for at least a year. Many skip far longer. And almost every one of them feels exactly what you’re feeling right now — embarrassed, anxious, worried about cost, worried about being judged, worried that things have gotten too bad to fix.
They haven’t. And neither have yours. Here’s where to start.
Step 1: Know what the first visit actually is
The thing most returning patients dread is “the marathon visit” — the appointment where the dentist takes one look and immediately starts drilling, cleaning, lecturing, and ringing up a four-figure bill.
That’s not what a first visit looks like — not here, anyway. A real first visit for a returning patient is:
- A conversation first. We sit down and talk — about what’s been going on, what you’re worried about, what hurts, what you want.
- A gentle look. We examine your teeth, gums, and bite. We may take a few digital x-rays so we can see what’s happening below the surface.
- An honest summary. We tell you what we see, in plain language. Good news included.
- A plan, written down. Not a sales pitch — a real plan, with options, prices, and what’s urgent vs. what can wait.
That’s it for visit one. No drills. No shots. Often no cleaning yet — just the look and the plan. You leave knowing exactly where you stand.
Step 2: Get the cost question off your chest
Money is the second-biggest reason adults skip the dentist (anxiety is the first). So let’s address it directly.
- A new-patient exam with x-rays is one of the most affordable things in dentistry — usually covered by insurance, and modest out-of-pocket if you don’t have insurance.
- You’ll get a written estimate before any treatment, not after. You decide what to do, when, and in what order.
- Phased treatment plans are normal. You don’t have to fix everything in one trip.
- If something is urgent because of pain or risk, we’ll tell you. If something can wait, we’ll tell you that too.
Step 3: Pick the visit you can say yes to today
The fastest way to never come back is to imagine the full, all-in, fix-everything plan and decide it’s too much. So don’t.
Instead, pick the smallest version of a first step that you can actually say yes to:
- A phone call to ask questions before booking? Sure.
- A consult-only visit — no exam, no x-rays, just a conversation? We do those.
- A first appointment that’s just an exam, with the cleaning scheduled for a separate day so it’s not all at once? Easy.
- A first appointment with a family member or friend in the room? Welcome.
The point isn’t to do everything — it’s to take the one step that gets you back through the door.
What if it’s really bad?
It almost certainly isn’t as bad as you’re imagining. We’ve seen mouths that hadn’t been touched in 20+ years, and the people attached to them are still smiling and chewing today.
And even when there’s real work to do, it’s almost always fixable in a sequence that you can plan, pace, and afford — especially when you start sooner rather than later.
